The Battle of Stoffenbeck is a battle in the Union between King Orso's loyalist forces and a group of rebels led by Leo dan Brock. After a day of heavy fighting, Orso's side emerges victorious.
Background[]
Led to rebellion by members of the Open Council, Leo dan Brock organizes a force of soldiers that includes his men in Angland and the Northmen loyal to Stour Nightfall. They cross the Circle Sea from the north to Midderland where King Orso's army is preparing for the invasion. A group of rebel Lords from the Open Council join up with Leo on his march south. As the enemy approaches, Orso's forces dig in at the town of Stoffenbeck and General Forest organizes the defenses on the north side.
The Battle[]
Leo dan Brock's forces take the offensive, first sending in his troops from the Open Council. They advance on Orso's left wing. Arch Lector Pike commands a cannon brigade that unleashes cannon fire on them, inflicting heavy casualties.
Leo's forces are superior in number and continue to press the Union's defensive position. Growing impatient, Stour Nightfall attacks from the left, and forces Leo to engage with his men from Angland. The recently promoted Lord Marshal Forest commands capably and bravely, but is unable to withstand the attack on the right wing. Outflanked, Orso's forces are overwhelmed and retreat back to the town.
A cavalry regiment led by Lord Marshal Rucksted arrives just in time to push back the attacking forces. Leo makes a final brash charge to capture Orso and turn the tide of battle. Upon arriving in the center, he finds the position has been abandoned and continues on to the town itself. An ambush is set up and fires upon Leo's men, killing Antaup and Whitewater Jin. Leo is severely injured and taken captive.
Stour continues to fight on but is persuaded to abandon the battlefield by Jonas Clover. The Union pursues the Northmen until they have fled from Midderland.
Savine dan Glokta also flees from the battle with her two assistants Gunnar Broad and Zuri. Later she returns to surrender and ask for mercy for herself and her husband Leo.
The Aftermath[]
The battle is a decisive victory for King Orso. Leo and most of the main conspirators from the rebellion are either captured or killed. Only Lord Isher manages to escape.
Within three days, 12 of the main conspirators are lined up on a scaffold in the main square of Stoffenbeck and sentenced to death. One by one they are hung, until only Leo remains. At the last moment, Orso commutes Leo's sentence to life in prison.
While the Union's soldiers are away in Stoffenbeck, the other cities in Midderland are unguarded, allowing for an uprising by the Breakers.
