Rattleneck was Caul Shivers’ father, and a chieftain who opposed Bethod. He swore there would be no peace until Bethod was dead. He was a balding man, running to fat but a big man still, with gold links in his chain-mail shirt and gold rings in his hair.

His eldest son fought Logen Ninefingers and lost, but was taken as a captive. Bethod had wanted to ransom his son back to Rattleneck, inviting him to talk, but his son was Logens prisoner, so Bethod had to ask him to give Rattleneck's son to him. Even the Dogman tried to tell Logen that giving Rattleneck son was the best decision, and for a moment everyone thought he had come to his senses. Rattleneck met Bethod at the latter ones hall. Rattleneck and Bethod were about to struck peace.
But Logen, naked, killed Rattleneck's son down in the cellar, hanging his guts up and taking off his head. Then, Logen cut his arms and legs off, and nailed his head on Bethod’s standard. Rattleneck was never the same after his son’s death. His eldest son was his favourite, and didn´t much care for Shivers. He died shortly before the events in the trilogy.
