Reckoning is the forty-eighth chapter in Last Argument of Kings.
Chapter Summary[]
Now Logen agrees with Red Hat; no Northman should die in this war that means nothing to them — except the Bloody-Nine. He creeps deeper into the Agriont, searching for Jezal or Ferro, but finds instead an Eater. They fight. Before the Eater can strike the deathblow, Shivers attacks, then Grim and Dogman as well. Grim takes a massive blow, flinging him across the square, but eventually overwhelmed by numbers, the Eater is killed by Logen. Even with Grim dying, Logen ditches his oldest friends to continue chasing down Jezal and Ferro. Grim dies in The Dogman’s arms.1
Outside, as Lord Marshal West approaches the Agriont, the Gurkish are on the run, despite the massive breach in the walls. The scene before Collem West is strange, a black formless whirlwind rising high above the citadel. Suddenly his horse dumps him, as the Tower of Chains begins to shift, raining down debris. Then everything goes black.
In the University, Glokta pushes Goyle through the black riveted door first, where he’s promptly shot with a flatbow. Inside, they finds the Adepti and Arch Lector Sult calling forth some grim ritual. Fearful of entering the room, Cosca, for the first time in his life, throws a dagger and hits his target—the centre of the Adeptus Demonic’s forehead. He dies and with him, so does the ritual. Glokta promptly arrests Sult and the others on charges of treason against the High King of the Union.
Meanwhile in the palace, tired of running Jezal confronts The Twins, side by side with Gorst. Before they can attack, High Justice Marovia dashes between them, and slices the Eaters in two with The Divider. Then before their eyes, Marovia's face desolves to become Yoru Sulfur. Suddenly there is a bang, and the door bursts open, with Logen Ninefingers stumbling into the room.
In the Square of Marshals, no buildings remain standing. Bayaz drunk on the power of The Seed, seems unwilling to end the tumult. Insulated within a bubble of calm, Ferro hears the voices of Demons on The Other Side, pleading with her to free them. They ask her to trust them, but to Ferro, trust is a word only liars use. With the last of her strength, she puts The Seed in the box and closes its lid.

- Rest in peace, Harding Grim. The archetypal “strong but silent” type who only opens his mouth to invariably say something completely banal or a statement of the obvious, yet his last words are strangely beautiful and observant.
