Superior Risinau is the head of the King's Inquisition in Valbeck, and secretly one of the founders of the dissident group known as the Breakers. He claims to be the Weaver, but later admits that it's not true.

Appearance and Personality[]

Risinau is a plump man, soft, pale and sweaty. Arch Lector Glokta describes him as a fat man prone to folly, with no imagination but plenty of loyalty. Superior Pike however described him as too little spine and too much imagination.

History[]

Twenty years before the start of the series, Risinau was an Inquisitor in Valbeck. He arrested Collem Sibalt for organising a union in one of the first mills, but released him as an informant. In fact, Risinau had been converted to his cause, and founded the Breakers movement, together with the mysterious Weaver. Risinau is now the leader in Valbeck, while Silbalt is the leader in Adua.

A Little Hatred[]

Superior Risinau seems to be the loyal head of Valbeck's Inquisition, and even has dinner with the Arch Lector's daughter Savine when she visits the city. However, Valbeck has been allowed to become a hotbed of dissidents, and Risinau himself openly speaks at Breakers meetings. He nevertheless takes an apathetic attitude to the city-wide insurrection; his underling Malmer largely organises the Breaker controlled areas, while Judge is completely out of his control in the Burner areas. It is clear to Vick that Risinau is a pompous dreamer, and someone far more formidable actually organised the insurrection. As soon as Prince Orso arrives at Valbeck with his regiment, Risinau and Judge flee, leaving Malmer to face the consequences.

The Trouble With Peace[]

The Breakers and Burners agree to support Leo dan Brock's rebellion against the crown, in return for new armour and weapons. In fact, they play no role in the Battle of Stoffenbeck. When the King's Own withdraw to support King Orso, the dissidents take control of unguarded Valbeck, Keln, Holsthorm and many of the smaller cities; Adua will be next. Arch Lector Pike explains this to Vick dan Teufel as they enter Valbeck to find Judge and Superior Risinau in the main square, surrounded by well-armed men; kingly provided by Savine. Pike then admits to being the Weaver, and persuades Vick to join the movement for "A Great Change".
