“ | He had always thought of civilisation as a machine, cast from rigid iron, everything riveted in its proper place. Now he saw it was a fabric gauzy as a bride’s veil. A tissue everyone agrees to leave in place, but one that can be ripped away in an instant. And hell lurks just beneath. | ” |

The Little People is the thirtieth chapter of A Little Hatred.
Chapter Summary[]
Lisbit1 waits in Savine's carriage oblivious to the insurrection within the manufactory. As she practices her mannerisms, determined to permanently replace Zuri, she is aghast to see some bald vagrant-woman shuffling towards the carriage; Savine. Suddenly the vagrant veers away, as Breakers barge into the carriage looking for the Arch Lector’s daughter. They drag Lisbit out shrieking, and begin to beat her, until one of the leaders takes charge. The face-maid is added to a line of chained prisoners, being taken to the courthouse. Among the prisoners is Mistress Sirisk, one of Savine’s dinner-guests the previous night. This is a city-wide insurrection, marked by beatings, robbery, arson, rape, and murder. Savine shambles along following the chain-gang, not knowing where to go to find safety. She reaches the city square, where things are even more hellish. One prisoner has been tied to a stake on an unlit-pyre, while others are forced to dance around naked, amid the firelight from the burning banking house of Valint and Balk.
