“ | Logen: That’s the thing about trust, sooner or later you just got to do it, without good reasons. Ferro: Why? Logen: Otherwise you end up like us, and who wants that? Ferro: Huh. |

The Thing About Trust is the sixth chapter in Before They Are Hanged.
Chapter Summary[]
Ferro and the rest of Bayaz’ crew ride out of Calcis en-route toward Darmium, ignoring the warnings of the guard at the bridge to reconsider their dangerous journey. Out on the plain, Ferro becomes increasingly agitated by the nature of their expedition. She presses Bayaz for their ultimate destination, and on the First Law, Khalul, and the Seed. Barely hiding his annoyance, Bayaz refuses to give specifics, only saying the Seed is her route to revenge against the Gurkish. Ferro grows to trust the First of the Magi even less and makes a decision to flee.
During the night, Ferro is making her escape from the camp when Logen gently stops her. She considers killing him, but remembering his transformation into the Bloody-Nine, thinks better of it. Logen tries to persuade her to stay, telling her that back home they would both be alone, but together they can watch each other’s backs.1 Ferro reluctantly agrees, at least until she can escape unnoticed.
