“ | He’s the king of killers! No man made more deadly, not anywhere under the moon. | ” |
— Crummock-i-Phail about Logen Ninefingers
|
The Trap is the seventeenth chapter in Last Argument of Kings.
Chapter Summary[]
Logen and four hundred Carls, and more or less as many Hillmen, are now trudging high in the High Places through a narrow gorge. Suddenly, Crummock announces they’ve arrived. Logen boggles, as do the other men; the fortress Crummock promised is just a crumbling wall with a little tower, half falling down on its own.
As they turn on Crummock, the Hillman shrugs, the wall doesn’t matter, the Moon is on their side. With no options, Dogman begins to make plans all the same. Repair the wall and gate as best they can, and split the men into three crews: his archers and boulder throwers, Logen’s men on the wall, and Crummock’s men in reserve. Outmanned ten-to-one with no option of retreat; what could go wrong?
That night, Logen walks through the fires looking for Dogman. Instead, he finds Crummock, telling his children of his prowess in battle. His daughter points to Logen and shouts that her father could take him. Crummock laughs and cautions her that Logen is truly a merciless killer. When one of his sons ask who would win between the Bloody-Nine and the Feared, even Crummock cannot predict the outcome, but the Moon would very much love to see it.1

- There is a nice bit of foreshadowing there at the end, when Crummock’s son asks about a duel between Logen and the Feared.
