It seems sometimes, that every decision I make in this chamber is between two equally bad outcomes, with the best option to make no decision at all!

The World's Wrongs1 is the first chapter of The Trouble With Peace, the second book in The Age of Madness Trilogy.

Chapter Summary[]

High King Orso2 convenes a meeting of his Closed Council. His latest idea of making a grand tour of The Union is met with general grumbling about the unsettled state of the realm. At home, the Breakers and Burners have become even more extreme in their opinions, stirring-up popular discontent with a flood of pamphlets. And overseas, The Union is surrounded by enemies, particularly with Styria agitating a secession movement in Westport. The conversation moves on to Fedor dan Wetterlant, a member of the Open Council accused of rape and murder. The matter is rather delicate: the nobles would view finding Wetterlant guilty as an attack on one of their own; while the commoners would see finding Wetterlant innocent as unjust, emboldening the Breakers. The Closed Council favor tying-up the trial in legal procedure until he dies in prison. Orso is horrified at such inaction, but has no solution of his own, for now.

  1. The second book seems to begin a few months after the end of A Little Hatred. In his first chapter, Leo dan Brock says his duel with Stour was six months ago.
  2. Here, Orso rubs at the sore spots he has developed round his temples. His father made a rather similar gesture in Last Argument of Kings.
