— Collem West on King Jezal
|
The Wounded is the fifty-first chapter in Last Argument of Kings.
Chapter Summary[]
Collem West wakes, his entire body racked with pain. Surrounded by groans and cries of agony, a woman’s face emerges from his delirium; Lieutenant Kaspa’s cousin Ariss. He is in a field hospital, and she is caring for all the injured.
When he next wakes, Ardee is by his bedside. As the pair share an awkward reunion, a murmur spreads through the wounded; King Jezal is visiting the heroes of Adua. Jezal works his way slowly through the men with all the authority and majesty of his station. Reaching West, the pair exchange kind words, as Lord Chamberlain Hoff insinuates himself between the King and Ardee.
Slowly recuperating, West next gets a visit from Captain Jalenhorm. Jalenhorm fills him in on the situation in Adua: in his absence General Kroy is holding things together in the Army; no one understands what caused all the damage in the Agriont, but rumours abound that Bayaz was involved; and the wasting disease continues to spread rapidly.
As Jalenhorm leaves, West tries standing with a stick to test his pain-stricken body, only to be struck by a wave of dizziness. As West pulls his hands from his spinning head, a chunk of hair comes away in his fingers; the first sign of the wasting disease.2
